What is organic food?
The European Union specifies that organically grown fruits and vegetables must avoid the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers, promoting production based on techniques and methodologies that take advantage of the natural synergies existing in nature.
Organic products: safer?
We can talk about more safety in organic food because it is 100% free of phytosanitary substances, and therefore are clean food that will not contribute residues to the body. On the other hand, conventional fruits and vegetables cannot guarantee the null transmission of residues to organisms, as demonstrated by the presence of traces of organophosphorus pesticides in various studies carried out.
Organic fruit and vegetables: more vitamins?
There are different opinions as to whether or not the amount of vitamins and minerals is higher in foods of organic origin. The reality is that there are numerous scientific studies in which a comparison between conventional and organic foods, reflected a higher nutritional density in micronutrients: up to 6% in compounds such as vitamin C and up to 16% more in polyphenols.
Therefore, we can say now that consuming organically produced food helps us to obtain higher amounts of vitamins and micronutrients in our diet. Organic food not only gives us physical benefits in our body, it means consuming more sustainable food with the environment that contribute to the circular economy and production systems that care for the planet.
